Desexing Recommendations

Desexing is an important part of preventative healthcare for dogs and provides a range of benefits, including preventing unwanted litters, reducing the risk of certain reproductive diseases, and assisting with behavioural management in some pets.

In general, dogs can be desexed from around 6 months of age. However, the most appropriate timing will vary depending on the individual dog. Factors such as breed, expected adult size, growth and skeletal development, temperament, lifestyle, and overall health should all be considered when planning surgery.

For larger and giant breed dogs, delayed desexing may be recommended to support optimal bone and joint development. In other cases, earlier desexing may be appropriate depending on behavioural factors, household environment, or specific medical considerations. Your veterinarian will help determine the most suitable timing for your pet.

Cats are typically desexed between 5–6 months of age, although timing may vary slightly depending on individual circumstances and veterinary recommendation.
