Soft Tissue Surgery

Soft tissue surgery refers to surgical procedures involving all body tissues other than bones, joints, and the nervous system. This includes a broad range of commonly performed procedures in veterinary medicine.

Common soft tissue surgeries include desexing procedures, removal of skin lumps and masses, abdominal surgery (including intestinal procedures), and other internal or external surgical treatments as required.

Pre-surgical admission

Patients are admitted on the morning of surgery. Owners are welcome to accompany their pet during admission to help reduce stress and allow settling into the clinic environment. A full pre-anaesthetic examination is performed to ensure your pet is suitable for surgery, and sedation is administered prior to the procedure.

We also highly recommend pre-anaesthetic blood testing prior to any general anaesthesia. These blood tests help assess your pet’s liver and kidney function, blood sugar levels, and red and white blood cell counts. This information allows us to identify any underlying health concerns that may not be apparent on physical examination alone and helps us tailor the anaesthetic protocol to your pet, improving safety and reducing surgical risk.

During surgery

General anaesthesia is administered and closely monitored by the veterinary surgical team and experienced nursing staff. Continuous monitoring of vital parameters, including heart rate, respiration, and oxygenation, is carried out throughout the procedure to ensure patient safety.

Intravenous fluid therapy is typically provided during surgery to support circulation and blood pressure, maintain hydration, and help ensure adequate blood flow to vital organs such as the kidneys and brain. Fluids also improve post-operative recovery quality.

Recovery and post-operative care

Following surgery, patients are closely monitored during recovery in a clean, warm, and comfortable environment. Most pets are discharged once they are fully awake, mobile, and comfortable on appropriate pain relief. In some cases, overnight hospitalisation may be recommended for continued monitoring and care.

Detailed post-operative instructions are provided at discharge to support a safe and smooth recovery at home.
